Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Higher Education Council prepared a draft curriculum document for the four-year undergraduate programme, though the higher education department was wary of implementing the recommendation of the National Education Policy 2020 ‘hurriedly’.
The draft curriculum which was allegedly prepared without the approval of the government-appointed curriculum committee, has already been forwarded to the universities. Hence, the curriculum committee members have decided to approach the government against the move of the higher education council.
At the curriculum workshop held in April, Minister for Higher Education R Bindu had publicly rebuked the stance of higher education council vice chairman Dr Rajan Gurukkal.
According to the draft document, the latest curriculum will include definite proposals of the National Education Policy, while certain others will be excluded. The department of higher education asserted that the curriculum committee will issue guidelines if any discrepancies surfaced in the draft document.
The 39 member committee for curriculum revision was appointed by the state government in January under the executive vice-president of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Dr Suresh Das. The meetings were held via online as many of the members of the committee were experts from various cities outside the state. The committee members conducted an offline meeting following the curriculum workshop held in April. However, several members could not attend this meeting as it was allegedly held under short notice. The members had decided to prepare a final document by codifying the opinions that emerged during the meeting. Meanwhile, the council prepared the draft curriculum document and sent it to the universities.
